The easy answer is YES my soap has glycerin in it! But there is a little bit more to it than that.
What's so great about glycerin soap?
Glycerin is a humectant – a “moisture magnet” that attracts moisture out of the air to our skin. Instead of washing away moisture, the glycerin can replenish with its hydrating properties. I like the sound of that!
But glycerin isn't on the list of ingredients...
The beauty of handmade soap is the simplicity, the wholesomeness of the ingredients. All 444Farm soap is oils, goat's milk, water and lye. I don't add glycerin, I make glycerin!
The magic of handmade soap happens when the lye and the oils mix and create a chemical reaction called saponification. If you think back to your high school chemistry class you would get all starry-eyed as you ponder that fats + lye/water = soap + glycerin.
If your chemistry knowledge remains buried deep, think of it this way - it's a bunch of X's and O's that are a big kiss for your skin.
But doesn't that mean that any soap is glycerin soap?
You would think so, but commercial soaps recognized glycerin as a good thing so they remove most of the glycerin from the soap and sell it to use in products that can command a higher price. It just about leaves you speechless to think that they are removing the good part, doesn't it?!
Glycerin soaps are supposed to be transparent. Yours aren't!
I think that's what most people think of when they think of glycerin soap. Transparent soaps add alcohol so the soap stays clear. Many of the glycerin soap bases also contain synthetic foaming and wetting agents. These are probably the things that you need to stay away from if you are being urged to use glycerin bars. You may be better off using cold processed handcrafted soap so get the desired benefits.
Yikes! The question of glycerin soap got a whole lot more complicated, didn't it? That's the awesome thing about handcrafted soaps - you can always ask the artisan questions to understand their processes or ingredients. They love to talk shop and should be able to answer any questions you have.
