What a gorgeous fall! And we're so glad that it decided to take an extended stay here in South Dakota. This is how our place looked when Autumn just started showing its true colors. (The little bitty building is my soap shop.) But Fall isn't limited to just the leaves turning colors, fall also means apples!
It would be no exaggeration to say that it was a bumper apple year on the 444Farm. Look at those branches bend under all the weight of those apples! And if that wasn't enough, we had 8 more apple trees! (Plus pears, plums, and grapes!)
You would think that I would be drowning in apples and giving them away left and right but...
I bought this extremely cool Juicer Steamer from LEM's. And we have made apple juice, mulled apple juice, grape juice, apple grape juice and cran-apple juice. We cannot make enough! And it's so simple to use. Just put water on the bottom and quartered (unpeeled/uncored!) apples on the top with a bit of sugar sprinkled on them. Set the timer and sit down and watch The Voice! (The ONLY tv show I watch, but it's definitely a vice of mine.) An hour later, I unclamp the tube that comes out of the middle section and fill up the jars. The end. That's it!
We used to indulge in "100% Orange Juice, Not from Concentrate." That sounds so healthy, doesn't it?! And then I find out they add artifical flavor to make it taste like oranges. WHAT??? Gizmodo explains...
Once the juice is squeezed and stored in gigantic vats, they start removing oxygen. Why? Because removing oxygen from the juice allows the liquid to keep for up to a year without spoiling. But! Removing that oxygen also removes the natural flavors of oranges. Yeah, it's all backwards. So in order to have OJ actually taste like oranges, drink companies hire flavor and fragrance companies, the same ones that make perfumes for Dior, to create these "flavor packs" to make juice taste like, well, juice again.
Did I mention I LOVE my new Juicer Steamer? So I can't grow orange trees in South Dakota, but I sure can juice a whole lot of other stuff from my backyard! I love the wholesomeness of juicing our own fruit.
Here's the ingredient list of 444Farm apple juice: Apples, Sugar.
And the color...that's the real deal! No coloring added, it varies a bit on what kind of apples I use but it's always gorgeous!
