It's not uncommon to see deer along the shoreline getting a drink and we see a variety of waterfowl throughout the year. Pelicans, ducks, geese, tundra swans. It is a really noisy place to be, because there's never just one or two!
We got a pretty cool call from South Dakota State University today. They would like to include our slough in a study of Blue Winged Teal and Lesser Scaup ("Blue Bills") ducks.
What that means is that a couple of different times in April they will come out and count ducks.
Which I have to think is a lot harder than what it sounds. How do they get them to hold still while they count!?
Then they will be collecting water samples to study what goodies we have available for them to eat.
And finally they will be harvesting some of the ducks and finding out which of those goodies they did eat.
